2005 FILM CRITICS CIRCLE OF AUSTRALIA AWARDS FOR AUSTRALIAN FILM

LOOK BOTH WAYS, written and directed by Sarah Watt and produced by Bridget Ikin
was awarded BEST FILM at the 2005 Film Critics Circle Awards for Australian
Film. Look Both Ways also picked up awards for Best Director for Sarah Watt,
Best Actor in a Lead Role for William McInnes, Best Original Screenplay for
Sarah Watt and Best Editor for Denise Haratzis.
Rowan Woods’ Little Fish collected three acting awards, for Best Actress in a
Lead Role for Cate Blanchett, Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Noni
Hazlehurst and Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Hugo Weaving.
The Proposition collected two awards - Best Musical Score for Nick Cave and
Warren Ellis, Best Cinematography for Benoit Delhomme.
Best Adapted Screenplay was awarded to Robert Connolly and Elliot Perlman for
Three Dollars.
Best Australian Feature Documentary was presented to Nicholas Hansen’s Rash,
Best Australian Short Documentary was awarded to Girl in a Mirror by Kathy
Drayton and Best Australian Short Film went to Tony Krawitz’ Jewboy.
The Acknowledgement of Emerging Talent Award was presented to VCA student Tim
Dean for Directing.
Best Foreign Film – English Language was awarded to Million Dollar Baby directed
by Clint Eastwood and Best Foreign Film was awarded to Alejandro Amenabar’s The
Sea Inside.

The Awards were hosted by Andrew S Gilbert, recipient of the 2001 FCCA Award for
Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Mullet, and presented at a gala dinner at
the Royal Melbourne Yacht Club, St Kilda. This is the first time the awards have
been presented in Melbourne.
President of the FCCA, Variety Reviewer Russell Edwards said 2005 had been a
bumper year for Australian films. “This year we’ve seen Australian actors pushed
to dig deeper, and directors and scriptwriters have told us an equally wide
array of stories that have touched our hearts and captured our imaginations.”
In presenting the Best Actress award, ABC At The Movies film critic David
Stratton said this year it had been a pleasure to be able to praise and
recommend so many good Australian films.
The Film Critics Circle of Australia (FCCA) is the national body of professional
film critics in Australia whose aims are to promote excellence and integrity in
the art of film criticism and support the advancement of Australian and
international film culture. The FCCA is a cultural, non-profit organisation and
a member of FIPRESCI - the international body of critics and journalists. The
FCCA recognises outstanding achievement in Australian film through the FCCA
Annual Awards.
The FCCA Awards are presented with Financial Assistance from the Australian Film
Commission (AFC) Film Finance Corporation (FFC) and the AFTRS
